Biography

Fenne Smits works at the Brain Research and Innovation Centre of the Ministry of Defence since 2015, where she now works as a senior researcher. Her interest lies in the clinical application of neuroscience: how can neuroscientific knowledge help people with neurological and psychological complaints? Fenne has a special interest in techniques that can measure or influence brain activity, with a focus on non-invasive brain stimulation that formed the topic of her dissertation (Electric Current and Emotional Control). She is also fascinated by the relationships between sleep, mental health and brain function.

Overview of projects within the BRAIC

At the Brain Research and Innovation Centre, Fenne investigates effects of mild, non-invasive forms of brain stimulation including transcranial direct current and alternating current stimulation (tDCS and tACS) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). The main goal is to understand and develop brain stimulation methods to aid prevention and treatment of anxiety, trauma- and stressor-related and depressive disorders. See projects: STIM, CONTROL, BEATS, TMS implementation.

Regarding sleep, Fenne is involved in research projects aimed improving diagnosis and treatment of insomnia. See project: BR-IDGE.
